OPAL'S Page
I was Mrs. Rook's Classroom rabbit!
Opal's birthday was July 4, 1997. She spent nine wonderful years with us and is now hopping about munching on carrots and bananas in bunny heaven.
Opal was a mini-rex, and the color of her fur was "opal" because it changed colors as you pet her. Depending on the direction you pet her, you would see brown, gray, blue and white! The Kindergarteners thought this was so cool, they voted on Opal to be her name.
Opal's favorite part of the day (next to snack time) was hopping around the classroom. She was litter trained and would return to her cage to take care of business. (She was afraid of the echoes of the hallway and so never left the room.) She did a great job teaching the students how to care for a pet and how to use their "indoor voices" (bunnies have big ears and don't like lots of noise).
Some Skills Opal Taught Us:
-
Wash hands before and after petting an animal
-
How to pet an animal
-
Never pet an animal while they are eating
-
What foods are appropriate for an animal
-
How to clean an animal's cage (Kindergartener's could hand me supplies while we cleaned the cage together)
-
How much work and responsibility there is in taking care of an animal
-
Everyone had a pet (If they had to no home pets, they got to include Opal as their pet in all classroom graphs, activities, etc.)
